On the occasion of the 52nd World Environment Day, NELUMBO, NEPAL celebrated it by distributing dustbins and organizing an essay competition for students at Shree Udaya Secondary School which is located at Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality-07, Dhampus. World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5 since 1972, aims to spotlight pressing environmental issues such as air and plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level rise, and food security. It fosters awareness and drives changes in consumption patterns and environmental policies globally. The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” with the slogan “Our Land, Our Future: We are #Generatiorestoration.” This theme underscores the urgency of protecting the environment, restoring land, and combating desertification. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), land restoration can significantly enhance livelihoods, reduce poverty, and build resilience to extreme weather.

The essay competition on the environment theme was organized in different topics for primary and secondary level students i.e. “Our Land, Our Future: Role of Youths in Land Restoration” for secondary level students and “Our Land, Our Responsibility” for primary level students. All the students from grades 6-10 participated in the proposed environment-themed essay competition that was organized to create self-awareness among the students about recent environmental issues and to promote their reading and writing skills. Following mentioned rules and regulations were set for the essay competition:

  • Minimum of 500 words for secondary-level participants
  • Minimum of 250 words for primary-level participants
  • The content of the essay should align with the given title.
  • The time limit for essay writing will be 1 hour.
  • Express your ideas in your unique way.
  • Proper grammar with linguistic purity should be maintained in the essay.
  • The top 4 essays from each level will be rewarded with a certificate of appreciation and a prize.

The essays were evaluated by teachers and representatives from NELUMBO, NEPAL, based on the predetermined rules. Certificates of appreciation and prizes were distributed to the winners by Mr. Baburam Bhandari (Ward member, Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality-07), Ms. Nirmala Devkota (Senior Operations Officer, NELUMBO, NEPAL), and Ms. Shamika Basnet (Program Officer, NELUMBO, NEPAL) at the end of the program.
