Healthy ears are crucial for overall well-being, impacting education, employment, and general quality of life. One of the most common ear problems is hearing loss which affects over 1.5 billion people globally, and results from various causes, including congenital factors, infections, noise exposure, age-related issues, and use of certain medicines. Early detection and interventions, lifestyle choices, protective measures, and screenings in childhood are emphasized to mitigate the impacts of hearing loss. Likewise, oral health is considered fundamental to general health and well-being which refers to the condition of the teeth, gums, and entire oral-facial system, that enables us to smile, speak, and chew. It can impact appearance, interpersonal interactions, diet, nutrition, speech as well as physical, emotional, and social well-being. Even though oral health-related illnesses and conditions are largely preventable, it is still considered a major public health burden in many countries; they affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement, and sometimes even death.

In Nepal, most health services are concentrated in metropolitan regions, which restricts access to health care services including oral and ear health for the rural population. To fill in the gaps in accessing oral and ear health care services in rural and remote areas of Nepal, prioritizing the marginalized population, NELUMBO, NEPAL had launched the “Dental Care and Ear Care” project under which dental and ear camps are organized in various places to provide quality ear and oral health care services to those in need.

Through this project, NELUMBO, NEPAL conducted two days of “Free Ear Health Camp and Awareness Program” at Pokhara Metropolitan City-22, ward office on Mangsir 4-5, 2080 (November 20-21, 2023). This camp was conducted in coordination with the ward office of Pokhara Metropolitan City-22. Along with the free check-ups and treatments, prescribed medicines were also provided to the registered individuals as required.

The main objective of organizing this health camp was to provide quality ear and oral health check-up and treatment to those helpless and underprivileged people who are deprived of ear and oral health care services.

The major highlights of the camp were:

  • General Ear Checkups
  • Ear Syringing
  • Audio test
  • Medicine distribution as prescribed
  • Awareness
