Globally, over 80% of ear and hearing care needs remain unmet. The World Health Organization warns that nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide will develop hearing problems by 2050. In recognition of the challenges posed by hearing loss and related conditions worldwide, as well as the significance of early detection, prompt intervention, and preventive strategies, World Hearing Day has been observed annually on March 3 since 2007. This year’s theme for World Hearing Day was “Changing mindsets: Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all!” It presents an opportunity to raise awareness about deafness and hearing impairment, advocate for their prevention, and improve ear and hearing healthcare.

NELUMBO, NEPAL has been conducting Ear camps in different areas of its working from time to time for early detection and intervention of problems related to ear and hearing. Similarly, this year on the occasion of World Hearing Day, NELUMBO, NEPAL conducted awareness programs in two government schools: Shree Bindhabasini Secondary School and Shree Navin Secondary School situated in wards 02 and 04 of Pokhara Metropolitan City. Mrs. Pratikshya Basnet, Ear Care Partitioner facilitated the awareness program which aimed to educate students about ear and hearing care. A total of 226 students attended the awareness program in which the following topics were covered:                                                   :

  • Anatomy of Human Ear
  • Ear/hearing protection Do’s and Don’t
  • Myths and facts about hearing power
  • Myths and facts about hearing care
  • How to communicate with people with hearing disability

The students along with teachers actively participated in the awareness program and were very enthusiastic to learn more about ear and hearing care. After the completion of the program, a question and answer session was held, during which the students posed numerous inquiries about hearing care and dispelled myths they had previously believed. Even the attending teachers actively participated by asking questions. The program was well received by all participants, indicating the overall success of the awareness program.
